Modern Warfare’s massive update shrinks game size

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s latest patch containing update of Season 5 has gone live ahead of the release of new content, and as always, it is massive. But this time, Infinity Ward says that the update will shrink the overall install size of the game.

The Season 5 update which is available to be downloaded on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, weighs in at 54.2GB on PC and if you’re just playing Warzone, the download shrinks ever-so-slightly to 47.4GB. PS4 players get a smaller patch at 33.9GB but it requires 90GB of free space on the hard drive to initiate the download. Xbox One players will need to download 49.3GB of new content.

Paul Haile, Modern Warfare’s Production Director, had tweeted a few days ago that, “the download will be big, but the overall size of the game will shrink on your consoles after you download the patch, even though we're adding a bunch of new content for the season”.

"It's a priority for us to keep working on reducing the overall size of MW & WZ on your hard drives," continued Haile, "but at the same time also delivering new seasons for everyone to enjoy. We'll continue to work on this and keep pushing space reductions out with future updates."

As Modern Warfare takes up almost 200GB on all platforms, this shrinkage of the install size will come as good news to many players who would like to have other large games installed on the same hard drive. A new feature has also been added i.e. allowing players to delete parts of the game they’re done with.

The developers hinted that the overall Modern Warfare file size would shrink as a result of the Season 5 update, but the new blog and Paul Haile’s tweet confirmed that this benefit is only for those playing on consoles while the PC players are going to need that extra Modern Warfare-only hard drive.

According to the rumours, the new season of Call of Duty: Warzone will include major changes to the Call of Duty: Warzone map which includes a moving train, the opening of Stadium, and potential crossover tie-ins to Call of Duty 2020. Though, all of this is still yet to be confirmed and released.

If the players own the full version of Modern Warfare, the map content is upped accordingly. They can expect to play four new maps in Season Five which are all set to deliver brand new destinations and test skills in all major modes from Gunfight to Ground War.

The Livestock (Gunfight) and Verdansk International Airport (Ground War) are going to be available at the season launch. Also, Petrov Oli Rig and Suldal Harbour are going to be available for multiplayer mode. The blog gave insight into the new armaments as well.

Players worldwide are excited for the release of Season 5 and are waiting to try out all the new modes and missions. They are also expecting to see an install size reduction as promised by the developers.
